Killeen Plumbing Questions, Answered Honestly
The questions we hear every week from homeowners, landlords, and military families around Fort Hood — including a few you should ask any plumber before hiring them.
Local water & plumbing
Where does Killeen's water come from, and why is it so hard?
The City of Killeen treats surface water from Belton Lake, the Corps of Engineers
reservoir on the Leon River. That water is mineral-rich — independent tests of
Killeen tap water put it in the "very hard" range, around 15 grains per gallon.
It's safe to drink, but the dissolved minerals shorten water heater life, crust up
fixtures, and stain glass. Equipment choices and maintenance schedules here should
account for it — ours do.
Is it "Fort Hood" or "Fort Cavazos"?
Both names are in circulation, and locals mostly just say "Fort Hood" or "post."
The installation was renamed Fort Cavazos in 2023 and the name was changed back to
Fort Hood in 2025 — now honoring Col. Robert B. Hood, a World War I Medal of Honor
recipient. Either way, it's the largest active-duty armored post in the country,
home to the III Armored Corps and the 1st Cavalry Division, and the engine behind
Killeen's housing market.
Why do so many Killeen homes get slab leaks?
Three factors stack up: most homes are slab-on-grade with water lines under the
concrete; Bell County's blackland clay swells and shrinks seasonally, stressing
those lines; and very hard water accelerates corrosion inside copper pipe. The
combination makes under-slab pinhole leaks a predictable local issue, especially
in homes from the 1960s–1990s.
Should I flush my water heater? How often?
Yes — annually at minimum, and honestly twice a year is better in Killeen's water.
Sediment from hard water settles on the tank bottom, buries the lower element, and
makes the unit rumble and run longer. If you've never flushed a 10-year-old heater,
have us do it and inspect the anode rod at the same time.
How long should a water heater last around here?
Nationally the rule of thumb is 8–12 years. With Belton Lake water and no flushing,
we see plenty die at 6–8. With annual maintenance and a healthy anode rod, 10–12 is
realistic. Tankless units can run longer — 15–20 years — but need descaling service
in this water.
Military families, renters & landlords
We're PCSing in six weeks. What plumbing should we fix before listing?
The inspection killers, in order: active leaks (obviously), water heaters past
~10 years, polybutylene or visible galvanized pipe, slow drains, and dripping
fixtures. A pre-listing walkthrough costs little and lets you stage the work —
we can knock out the whole punch list in a visit or two and document everything
for the seller's disclosure.
We live out of state and own a rental in Killeen. How does this work?
Constantly. Most of our landlord clients are remote. Coordinate access with your
property manager or tenant, we do the work, and you get photos, model/serial
numbers, and flat-invoice detail by text or email. Payment by card or Zelle.
Do you work with tenants, or only property owners?
We work with whoever calls — but for rental repairs we'll confirm authorization
with the owner or manager before starting, and we bill whoever the work order
says to bill. Tenants: if your lease makes you responsible for a repair, get
written approval before we roll.
Can you hit a deadline — like a move-out inspection on Friday?
Usually, yes — tell us the date when you call and we'll commit or tell you we
can't. We don't take jobs we can't schedule properly; a missed inspection date
costs you more than an honest "no."
Hiring & pricing
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes — licensed plumbing contractor with general liability coverage, and we'll
happily provide documentation on request (landlords and property managers ask for
this every week). Texas doesn't license individual journeyman plumbers the way some
states do; the contractor registration is what to verify, and ours is current.
How fast can you get here?
Same-day for most of Killeen, Harker Heights, and Copperas Cove when you call in
the morning; active leaks and sewage backups jump the queue. Non-urgent work is
usually scheduled within a few days. We give arrival windows and actually text
when we're on the way.
Do you charge by the hour?
No — flat pricing per job, quoted and approved before we start. Hourly billing
rewards slow work; we'd rather reward doing it right the first time. See our
pricing page for typical ranges.
What areas do you serve?
Killeen, Harker Heights, Nolanville, Copperas Cove, and Belton daily; select work
in Salado and Temple for larger projects. Details on our
service areas page.
Do you warranty your work?
Every repair carries a workmanship warranty (typically a year; longer on repipes),
and installed equipment carries manufacturer warranties. We register warranties
for you and keep the paperwork on file.
